Bedford Parkrun - 27.07.13

With a number of FlitwickTri in action at MK and others away it was left to Steve to represent the group at Bedford Parkrun last weekend.

The conditions were ideal, if a little warm, and Steve got close to a PB with a time of 24.34.

Well done.

Wycombe 10K - 21.07.13

I was the sole representative of Flitwick Tri at the above event on Sunday. Thankfully an early start time of 9.30am meant good running conditions with it being windless, no sun and temperatures of around 17degrees. The only negative was that it was quite humid.

The route was one lap starting and finishing at The Rye. The most memorable part of the race was a 1k hill between 1 & 2k that rose approx 84m. This 1k took me 7 minutes some 2 minutes slower than any other 1k time.

The upside of such a hill was that the remaining 8k was mainly downhill. The race commentator found it quite amusing that whilst Wycombe does have flat roads this race does not use any of them.

I completed in a time of 54m 12s coming 95th out of 287 runners.

Murphy's adventures

Asking Jason to send me a report is a pointless exercise so I'll make up a report for him from things he has told me about.

Last Saturday Jason finally took the plunge, literally, and went off to Reading to try on and then try out a wetsuit for open water swimming. Having got on OK during the first test swim of 400m he came home complete with new suit, goggles and bodyglide.

Having acquired the new suit Jason was keen to give it another go and ventured up to Box End on Monday night to obtain some guidance and encouragement from our very own Ironman, Garry, who swam with him.

Despite his initial nervousness Jason was soon in the swim of things (see what I did there!) and went on to swim 1700m which is just under the half-ironman distance he needs to swim in September.

Good on you Jason!

KImbolton Triathlon - 21.07.13

Hi Folks

Steve and I took part in the Kimbolton Triathlon last Sunday on a nice overcast day. Thankfully the day was coolish as we didn't start until nearly 1pm. The event comprised a 400m pool swim, 20k cycle and a 4k run.

I managed to better last years time by nearly 3 minutes for a finishing time of 1hr 15m 33sec. Steve in his first triathlon got the better of me with a great time of 1hr 10m 19sec. I take pride in that we had exactly the same time in the swim and I beat him in both transitions! However Steve beat my by about 4 mins on the bike and a minute on the run.

We thought the run was supposed to be 5k but they finally admitted it had actually been set up to be 4k.

Bring on the Terry Wooton Roade Triathlon on 29th September - does anyone want to join us?

A good day was had by all.

Pete

Bedford Parkrun 20.07.13

Four FlitwickTri members took part in the Bedford Parkrun on Saturday and were no doubt pleased to find  the weather rather cooler than of late.

The conditions clearly suited Fiona who achieved yet another PB.

Times were:

Fiona Jones         28.33
Pete Jones          28.36
Les Potts             28.36
Sian Jones           40.25

Well done all.

Bedford Parkrun - 13.07.13

Bedford Park was at its best on Saturday morning bathed in glorious sunlight. A lovely morning for a picnic but at 25c in the shade at 8.45am it was a bit warm for a 5K. Les, Ellen and I were there to run and it's fair to say Ellen made light of the heat and achieved a big PB knocking nearly 2 minutes of her best at Bedford Parkrun. Well done Ellen!

Times were:

Chris Wright          22.28
Les Potts               25.18
Ellen Wright          32.29

Standard Chartered City Run - 11.07.13

On Thursday evening 9 colleagues and I went to the heart of the City of London to take part in the 2013 Standard Chartered City Race which is a 5K run around closed roads in the City of London including Moorgate, London Wall and Cheapside.

Around 6000 runners were taking part which on some of the roads made things a bit tight and led to some stopping and starting and made smooth running difficult. The evening was warm and sunny, a bit too warm for running.

I was very pleased to achieve a time of 21.37 for 854th place.

Silverstone Duathlon - 10.07.13

Pete and I entered race 3 in the Silverstone duathlon series on Wednesday evening, comprising a 2 mile run, 11.5 mile bike (3 laps of the F1 track) and another 2 mile run. I had a feeling of deja vu as it was a blustery evening just like race 2 with the wind even blowing from the same direction. There were about double the number of starters compared to the last race which made it a less lonely experience once everyone had spread out after the first run. Pete and I were very close together until halfway round the first bike lap when I moved ahead. I was delighted with my overall time of 1hr 10.48 which was 6 minutes faster than I managed last time and Pete was very pleased his calf held out this time, finishing in 1hr 14.46. I was 99th out of 133 and Pete 113th.

And belatedly I was officially recognised in last Saturday’s MK parkrun, finishing 89th in a PB of 24.09.

NSPCC MK Half Marathon - 07.07.13

Liam & I represented Flitwick Tri in this major event in aid of the NSPCC.

The course was really scenic and quite flat following quiet residential roads, the Redways and a decent chunk of the Grand Union canal; unfortunately it also coincided with one of the hottest sunniest windless days this year!

The weather accounted for 232 race withdrawals and I saw at least two guys down with, I’m presuming, heat exhaustion.

Out of 1147 finishers Liam came 472nd in a time of 2:05:41, and I came 758th in 2:22:10.

Both of us suffered in the heat and had to resort to a walking pace on too many occasions starting as early as the 10/11k mark. We were both very grateful for the many spectators / residents with water guns and hose pipes to cool us down.

Parkrun MK - 06.07.13

With several people having events on Sunday, me away cycling and Jason unwell it was left to Pete and Sian to represent FlitwickTri at this week's Parkrun on what proved to be the hottest day of the year so far.

Times were.

Pete Jones      24.24
Sian Jones       43.28

Well done both.

Chris

A (not very) relaxing day at the seaside.

Well I was up very early yesterday to get down to the New Forest for a 7.45am start in the Wiggle Isle of Wight Ferry Sportive. I was taking part with my friends Andy and Mark and the weather when we arrived was already very warm, an ominous sign with the tough route ahead.

The event started and finished in Brockenhurst with rides to and from Lymington with ferry crossings to the Isle of Wight before and after the hilly 45 mile loop round the island. (Timings were stopped for the crossings).

The first section 10 mile to Lymington was straightforward and we made good time. The crossing was almost flat calm and then the real ride got started. The island is far from flat and we seemed to spend all the time to the feed station at Ventnor either going up or down with very little flat to speak of. The feed station was at 38 miles after a couple of punishing uphill sections and at that point, after struggling on the climbs and hearing of the 2 biggest ones still to come, Andy  (who looked very rough at this point) decided, very sensibly, that he couldn't continue and would get a lift back to the ferry terminal.

Mark and I cracked on and soon came to a hill that seemed to go on for miles, probably because it did. Not massively steep but after nearly 3 miles of climbing I was very happy to go over the top. The views from the top over Freshwater Bay were however spectacular.

The next double climb had a false summit with a short drop before the second section which, depressingly, you could see stretching out before you as you crested the first ridge. After much sweating by me we made it to the top of the climb with Mark seeming annoyingly fresh.

The return leg on the ferry provided a welcome break and we took advantage of the air conditioned lounge deck to chill out for 40 minutes.

On the return to the New Forest we gave it a real thrashing for the last 10 miles and were passing tired people all the way.

Overall a very well organised event with some spectacular scenery and the ferry crossings providing an interesting twist. The route was good but tough in places.

Time wise I got round the 67.47 mile in a riding time of 4hr 19 min for an average speed of 15.6mph which I was very happy with. The legs feel a bit weary today though!
