Lovely conditions were enjoyed by a large field of over 330 runners.

Les Potts        29.01
Pete Jones      29.02
Sian Jones      38.04

Whipsnade Zoo Stampede 10K

Jason and I took part in the Whipsnade Zoo Stampede on Sunday in sweltering conditions. There were 562 runners, a few in lycra animal print suits, and I managed 79th in 47.11 with Jason in 373rd place in 63.10. Everyone we spoke to was well outside their best times due to the heat as shade was very limited and it was 26 degrees when we parked at 8.45am, and that was 45 minutes before the start.

We had a chat beforehand with Martin Beare who is a coach from Ampthill and Flitwick Flyers and an age group long distance triathlete. He had lots of good things to say about our group and had apparently been chatting to Les at the Bedford 6K on Wednesday. He also liked our shirts. Very nice guy and worth bearing in mind if we decide some coaching is required.

BUPA London 10K

Hi Folks
Today I ran in the London Bupa 10,000. It was a very HOT run with well over 10,000 other runners!

Mo Farah won the race in an impressive 29min 21 sec with me a close 3225th in a time of 54min 28sec.
Not a PB for either of us but I am pleased with the time considering the heat.

It was a very well organised event that was a trial of the Olympic Marathon route for the summer.
It was very busy for the first 3k but at least it stopped me tearing off and running out of steam later, which
I probably would have done....
I would recommend it to you all as it was a lot of fun and I saw some sights of London I hadn’t seen before.

Bedford 6M

I took part in the Bedford 6, the second race in the East Midlands Grand Prix series, on Tuesday 22nd May.

Registration was at the very impressive Bedford International Athletics stadium with the 6 mile race taking place in the nearby Priory Country Park .

In a very competitive field of 324 I came 321st in a disappointing time of 64 minutes 31 seconds.
I hope for a much better result at the Brackley 10k Chicken Run on 3rd June.

Parkrun MK - 19.05.12

For a variety of reasons only two FlitwickTri members took part this week. Les managed a time of 30:40 and Sian, who had volunteered for tail runner duty, following round the last competitor and collecting signs in 47:06.

Bedford Sprint Tri - 20 May 2012

Hi all at Flitwick Tri

Today I completed in my 2nd Bedford Sprint Tri
My total time was 1hr 38min 42 sec ( Previous best was 1hr 51min ).
My new bike made quite a difference ( 8 min off previous time ).
The pool also went better with the 400m done in just on 12 min ( 3 min faster than last time ).
The 5k run was tiring but good at 24 min 26 sec ( only 30 sec off my PB).

Need less to say I am very happy !! Bring on the next one ......

Beat The Banana

I took part in the Beat The Banana charity 5K run in Hyde Park last night. It involved part of the Olympic Triathlon route including the stretch alongside The Sepentine. I was running along imagining myself taking part and whipping the Brownlees butts to take gold (and then I woke up).

Lovely flat route and perfect running conditions equated to a new PB of 20.13 so very happy with my evenings work. The event raised money for Cancer Research so a doubly successful evening.

Oh and yes I did beat the banana.

Parkrun MK - 12.05.12

A beautiful sunny morning in Milton Keynes greeted 293 parkrunners on Saturday. With very little wind they were lovely running conditions which 6 of our members took advantage of. The times were as follows:

Chris WRIGHT      21:58
Pete JONES      24:37
Jason MURPHY      27:38
Les POTTS      28:34
Fiona JONES      31:02
Sian JONES      38:27

Another PB for Les who has now knocked over seven and a half minutes off his PB since

September 2011. Very impressive!

Woburn Cycletta

Arriving at the Cycletta this morning my biggest challenge wasn’t whether I could complete the 40k course but how to keep Chris away from the Specialized stand.  Although I have to admit there were some very nice bikes on display!
The event was very friendly and relaxed and the weather was perfect for cycling.  The Woburn Cycletta is the flattest event in the series but I guess one woman’s flat is another’s hill and there seemed to be plenty of them. Everyone was very friendly and supportive and there was a whole range of bikes in the event ( yes, I admit I did suffer from cycle envy as several Bianchi’s whizzed by).  At about 30k into the route my legs started to slow down and a quick pit stop was most welcome. The hardest part of the ride was the long uphill bit in Woburn Park with the wind in my face but then it was all downhill to the finish where Chris and Ellen were waiting to cheer me on. I completed the route in just over 2 hours which was roughly what I had aimed for.  Next time I could probably do it in less.... if I have a better bike........now where is  that Specialized brochure.....

Thanks to everyone who supported me, especially Chris (training advice and encouragement) and Ellen (collector of freebies at the event and big hugs at the finish). I raised over £350 for Brain Tumour Research so a job well done.

Silverstone 10K

Les and I competed in the Silverstone 10k on 9 May and out of 1110 runners :
I came 615th in 50min 56 sec ( approx. 1 min off my PB) and
Les came 981st in 62 min 4 sec ( approx. 2 min off his PB )
Although the rain threatened it stayed fairly dry but there was quite a breeze !

Marston Forest 5K

I've just had a reminder about the Marston Forest 5K. This is another local event organised by Ampthill and Flitwick Flyers and takes place at Martson Vale Forest Centre at Marston Moretaine on Friday 15 June at 7.30pm. You can enter through the Runners World website www.runnersworld.co.uk or you can find an entry form at www.marstonforest5k.org.uk

This is a flat race on good running surfaces so PBs are a realistic possibility. So far we have 6 FlitwickTri members taking part.

Before the main race there is a 1K childrens' race at 7.10pm. Jason's daughter Keira and my daughter Ellen are currently planning to do this (in their FlitwickTri shirts). For this race I believe children can just turn up and take part.

Laces for trainers

As I use elastic laces in my trainers I have large selection of normal laces in my draw at home. There are a variety of colours and types including some non slip ones.

If you need some let me know and you can take your pick of the ones I have.

Parkrun MK - 05.05.12

A soggy Parkrun at Milton Keynes required a route change due to flooding but 4 Flitwicktri members braved the underfoot conditions. Here are their times:

Pete JONES      00:25:18
Les POTTS        00:30:34
Fiona JONES      00:31:51
Sian JONES      00:41:51

Well done to all 4 of you. Hopefully Jason and I will be joining you next week.

Swimming lessons - update from Dan

I had a call from the Flitwick Leisure Centre swimming instructor (Chantelle) and I let her know that Option 2 was more likely to work for us. From the times she offered, I discounted weekends and mornings leaving either: (a) 9-10pm on Monday or (b) 8:30-9:30pm on a Friday. 30 minutes or 1 hour lessons can be arranged as people prefer. I am happy to organise the first one if you let me know that you are interested (say Friday, 11th May or Monday, 14th) or you can call Chantelle for more info (I can give you the number). Prices will depend on group size and Chantelle will need to work something out with the centre and us.

Swimming lessons in Flitwick

Jason asked me to look into swimming lessons at Flitwick. I spoke to the swimming coordinator at Flitwick Leisure Centre (Gina Croxford) about lessons for our ability, mentioning triathlons.

There are two options. (1) is the Saturday morning 9am class, currently with 3 learners in. Unfortunately they are beginners, but Gina has been thinking about putting on a more advanced class as well. If we got 3 people together, then it would be a class the same size (so financially viable for the leisure centre) and the programme could be tailored to our needs. Option 1 works out at £8 per person per 30 minutes’ lesson, but it is a regular commitment for every Saturday during term time (read: if you don’t turn up, you still pay).

Option (2) is private coaching from the same instructor (Sharon). Price is about £14.50/30 minutes, and more than one person could be in the class (reducing cost per person).
Gina is going to get back to me in the next few days so please let us know if you are interested in either option.

MK half marathon 8 July 2012

Jason and I have taken the plunge and entered for the NSPCC Half Marathon in Milton Keynes on 8th July. If anyone fancies joining us please feel free to do so. The more the merrier!
