Training run - 27.01.13

Pete, Les and I took advantage of the big thaw to put in some training miles in Milton Keynes. With the paths at Willen Lake now clear of snow (but with many puddles) it seemed a logical choice of venue and with one lap round the two lakes making 2.5 miles it also offered a coice of distances, with the added option of halving a lap by using the path between the lakes.

The conditions were largely sunny (one very heavy but short shower on lap one) but quite windy which made things tough at parts of the lap.

Pete and Les opted for three laps and I decided to prolong my suffering by doing for four. Target times were largely achieved and the likelihood is we will do it again next week. All part of the build up to the Silverstone and Milton Keynes Half Marathons in March.

Parkrun - Wimpole Estate - 26.01.13

Yesterday saw Pete and Les in action at the picturesque but quite new Wimpole Estate Parkrun near Royston. With the run largely on grass coinditions were mucky underfoot and the hill on the course also slowed runners down.

Pete and Les ran together and finished in a time of 29.29.

Well done guys.

Hitchin Sportive on 19 May

I did this event last year and it was very enjoyable with a good route, very nice cakes at the food stop and as well as being local was well organised. In short, I'd recommend it.

There are 2 routes 80K and 80mile. I did the 80K last year and will probably do the same again this year as it was long enough to provide a decent workout.

For those that haven't taken part in a sportive before this would be a good introduction as you can go at your own pace on a marked route and apart from the climb from Hexton to Lilley (think long slog rather than alpine ascent) the route is not particularly hilly.

The website is www.gobeyondultra.co.uk if you fancy taking part.

A thaw at last!!!

Finally the thaw has started and we can look outside for training opportunities. With the Eton Duathlon next weekend it is not before time!

With the snow gradually going I'm off out on the bike this afternoon and conditions permitting will try and get 40+ miles in.

Tomorrow morning I off for a 10 mile run and have invited Pete and Les to join me. If anyone else wants to come along ping me an e-mail. Aiming for a gentle run at circa 9 minute miles as preparation for the Silverstone Half Marathon which is on 3 March.

If you are going out training please take care and don't go out too hard if you have had a snow enforced lay off.

Snow

Well the snow has well and truly arrived and whilst it looks very nice what a pain it is when it comes to training.

Jason and I braved the sub-zero temperatures last Monday to go swimming and the paths were clear enough for me to get out for a very cold run on Wednesday. The turbo trainer was then pressed into service on Thursday so at least the legs are getting a workout.

I understand that despite the conditions the MK Parkrun went ahead yesterday with Pete there alone doing a volunteering stint.

Jason and I were scheduled to do a 10 mile training run in Milton Keynes this morning for our forthcoming half-marathons but the snow and ice underfoot have put paid to that. The turbo trainer will therefore be getting another workout this morning.

Provided the Leisure Centre is open we will swimming tomorrow and look forward to seeing any other hardy souls there.

Now let's hope for an early thaw so we can all get back out running again.

Only 2 weeks until the Eton Duathlon so we also need to hope that we can get some training in to get our preparations back on track.
