Parkrun St Albans 23.06.12

Pete, Les and Sian ventured a bit further afield for the Parkrun today and took part in the run at St Albans. Their journey was clearly worthwhile as it resulted in 3 PBs by significant margins.

The times were:

Pete          23.32
Les            28.10
Sian          35.47

Very well done to al 3 of you!

USN Silverstone Duathlon 20.06.12

Hi Folks
Just got back from competing in my first USN Silverstone Duathlon.
It was a 2 mile run, 11.6 mile cycle (3 laps of the race track) and a final 2 mile run.
My respective times were 14m39s, 39m54s and 16m36s. A total time of 1 hr 12.35. Respectable for me and a base line time to work on. A slight breeze made the cycle challenging but enjoyable.

Hitchin Nomads Cycle Sportive

On Sunday I ventured over to Hitchin to take part in the Hitchin Cycle Sportive with my friend Andy from Silsoe. As it was big step up in distance for me we did the 80K rather than the 80 mile route.

Surprisingly the day dawned dry and bright and thankfully the strong winds from Saturday had eased significantly.

The ride started well with the new bike position (see below) feeling odd but comfortable and powerful. After about 10 miles we reached the seemingly never ending hill from Hexton up to Lilley. I managed to get up without stopping but had to wait for a short time at the top as Andy found the climb a struggle (as did I if I'm being honest).

From there it was another 8 miles to Emily's Tea Room for an almost halfway refueling stop. What a hidden gem it is, well worth building it into a training ride for the cake selection alone! It seemed from the number of cyclists that were there but not on our ride that this is a well known venue in cycling circles.

The remainder of the ride was undulating but took in some lovely villages and quiet country roads. One highlight was when a cycle club group came past and Andy and I got to ride in a rapid peleton of about 30 friendly riders for a few miles until our routes diverged.

In our race we managed to average 15.7mph and came 29th/30th out of 51. Not bad for my first go at anything like this distance.

Chris.

Ironman 70.3 UK

I completed yesterday's Ironman UK 70.3 in 7 hours 25 minutes. We camped overnight on the starting line to avoid race day travel panic, which I would recommend. Having read my Triathlon 220, I knew to keep my feet warm before the swim and had on an old pair of trainers. With an outside temperature of 9 degrees, a water temperature of 14 degrees and 30 minutes' delay to the start, quite a few barefoot people were shivering going into the water while I was able to keep toasty and have a jog. As a result, I had a storming swim, getting round in 37 mins. The bike - a tough 2 loops with 3 big climbs - was exactly the 4 hours I predicted before the race. I hadn't been racing so far, just pacing myself so I could have energy left for the notoriously hilly off-road run. However, from the off the run was a killer: I felt like I had nothing left, and the gels and Gatorade weren't doing anything. I ended up walking up the hills on the third and final lap, partly because those walking were overtaking me! I got to hobble through the most amazing finishing arch 2 hours 34 minutes later.

While I felt positive and confident all day, the one thing I would do differently next time is plenty of brick sessions to try and prepare for the jelly legs after the bike. I am ashamed to say I only did 1 bike-to-run training session as part of my preparation, which definitely told; I normally have a sub-2 hour half-marathon.

Overall, the day was great fun, with good support; it was hard not to smile at the extremely friendly and cheerful marshalls and locals with cowbells.

Bikefit - a review and recommendation.

On the recommendation of a friend who is a keen cyclist I spent a couple of hours at Priory Marina Cycling in Bedford on Saturday morning. The purpose of the visit was to make sure my bike set up (position) was correct before my 50 mile sportive on Sunday (seperate report to follow).

The fit was carried out by the mechanic and ex Bianchi Tour team member John who I am certain has forgotten more about cycling than I know.

Having thought my setup was about right I discovered that I was about 1.5 inches too far forward and that my turning the stem over to make the bars higher meant less steering control and hands that were too high.

A new seat post and some adjustments later and the position felt a bit odd but I was prepared to give it a go.

On Sunday morning we left the start and the got up to speed with minimal effort and I have to say John was correct when he said the new position would be much more powerful with more speed for less effort and importantly less risk of knee problems. 50 miles and many hills later no aches and pains so it must have worked.

The cost was a very reasonable £30 which means it's not quite free speed but near enough.

Be careful though they are Bianchi, Willier and Merkx dealers and have some stunning bikes on display.

Parkrun MK 16.06.12

Well done to 3 hardy souls for turning out on a very blustery Saturday morning the day after doing the Marston Forest 5K. Impressive dedication.

Times were:

Pete          26.40
Les            29.19
Sian           47.21 (as tailrunner).

Marston Forest 5k

Five adult members took part in the Marston 5 K, along with 334 other runners, on a dry but blustery Friday evening.  In addition two of our youth members, Ellen and Keira, ran the 1k Fun Run - well done girls for taking part and doing your best.

Times

Chris   22.10        (95)
Pete   23.51        (133)
Les     28.10        (226)
Jason  30.00        (253)
Sian     39.01       (336)

Well done to everyone, especially Pete with a new PB and Sian who kept running all the of the way and was significantly quicker than last year.

The only downside of the evening was that I agravated my ankle injury and was limping for the last 2K and am now banned from running until it has healed properly, which I am told is likely to be at least 4 weeks. :-(

Parkrun MK - 9 June 2012

Just 2 runners from FlitwickTri in the Milton Keynes Parkrun on Saturday but that didn't stop one of them setting a new PB.

Pete finished in a new PB time of 23.58 to dip under the 24 minuite barrier with Les finishing in 28.49 just 15 seconds outside his PB.

Some good form being shown by them both before the Marston 5K next Friday.

Silverstone Duathlon - 6 June 2012

Jason and I took part in a very windy Silverstone Duathlon on Wednesday evening. The track being exposed was certainly not a bonus especially on the long straight that we had to cover on our bikes on each of the 3 laps of the Grand Prix circuit.

The field was very strong with an amazing array of very tasty looking time trial bikes. All the GB age group triathlon suits and cycle team jerseys should have been a giveaway of what we were up against. The winners first 2 mile run time was 9.38!

Of the 100 finishers I managed 61st in 1.08.52 with Jason in 90th in 1.22.24. We were both pleased with our results given the high quality field

Pete came along to check out the event for the later races and to obtain photographic evidence of our efforts. A few examples appear below:

Ironman 70.3 UK

I will be taking part in my first half-Ironman (and my third ever triathlon) on Sunday, 17th June. This is not just any  Ironman 70.3 race, but the one cited as the toughest there is, with 52 hills on the bike and a punishing off-road run. But to be honest I will be looking forward to those events as it will mean I will have survived the swim - something I have been training hard for since I could barely do two lengths of front crawl this time last year.

I am raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association who looked after my wife's uncle until he died earlier this year - any donations for this folly will be much appreciated.

I think this is a really inspirational picture. Makes you realise that anything is possible.

Happy biking!

F1 Chicken Run 10K

Les and I took part in a very soggy F1 Chicken Run at Brackley on Sunday.

Out of a field of 195 I managed 105th in 52.03 and Les was 165th in 61.07.

Parkrun MK - 02.06.12

Sian and I did the Parkrun in Milton Keynes on Saturday.

I managed 24min 04 - just 2 sec off my PB which was frustrating.
Sian finished in 37min 43 about 30 sec off her PB....

Les volunteered and did numbers.
