On Saturday 4 of us ventured up to Bedford for the last Parkrun of 2013. The Christmas festivities seemed to have taken their toll however as there were no PBs this time.
The times were:
Chris Wright 22.05
Les Potts 24.50
Pete Jones 26.01
Sian Jones 37.18
Well done everyone.

Pirton Boxing Day Run
On Sunday morning a few of us ventured over to the Pirton Boxing Day run. This is a real family event with races for under 7's, under 13's, under 16's and adults. The morning was bright and sunny but there was a cold wind and the rain of the past few days had made it a bit soggy underfoot.
Keira Murphy took part in the under 13's 1K race which involved 2 laps round the perimeter of the sports field. She did very well finishing in a time of 6.23 and beating a number of children 2 and 3 years older in the process.
I took part in the adults race which was 3.2 miles. This involved 2 laps round the sports field and then out for a loop around muddy tracks between fields before returning to finish with a lap round the sports field. Despite the puddles and slippery conditions I managed to get to the finish in a time of 23.54 for 53rd place out of a field of 218.
Overall this was a very good event and one I aim to take part in again in future years.

MK Parkrun - Christmas Day
Hi Folks
I had a nice time running the Christmas day Parkrun at MK. There were 300 others dressed in christmassy garb and trying to run around the course.
Unfortunately due to flooding we were turned around at the 3k mark and so the 5k parkrun became nearly 6k !
It was nice to get up and out building up an appetite ready for my Christmas lunch.... and prezzies.

Bedford Parkrun - 21.12.13
Drizzly and chilly conditions greeted 4 FlitwickTri members to Bedford Parkrun on Saturday. Despite this Steve achieved a new PB which was frustratingly a few seconds short of breaking the 23 minute barrier.
Times were:
Steve Clough 23.04
Pete Jones 25.51
Fiona Jones 27.55
Sian Jones 37.45
Well done everybody.

MK Winter Half Marathon - 15.12.13
I took part in the inaugural Milton Keynes Winter Half Marathon on Sunday 15th December. Run entirely off-road being one lap around the city centre and hence avoiding all of the steeper hills, the course was something between undulating and flat. Being on the paths and Redways it was a relatively scenic route though. Weather conditions were ideal for running.
My lack of distance training recently had an effect in the latter stages of the race and I was slightly disappointed with a time of 1hr 58min 40sec and was placed 370th out of 624.

Aylesbury Parkrun - 14.12.13
On Saturday Pete ventured a little further afield to take part in the recently started Aylesbury Parkrun. He achieved a time of 25.47 which is a PB for Pete at the event and the 15th different Parkrun he has taken part in. Impressive stuff.
Well done Pete.

Bedford Parkrun - 14.12.13
This morning 3 of us were at Bedford Parkrun but 2, Les and Steve, were there as volunteers with Les' role being tail runner.
Conditions were dry and chilly but I paid the price for yesterday's office Christmas Party and missed out on my PB attempt. Oh well, may be next time.
Times were:
Chris Wright 21.46
Les Potts 44.33.

Andy Reading 10K - 08.12.13
Sunday morning saw 3 of us in action at the annual Andy Reading memorial 10K race in Bicester. As usual the race was on a chilly December morning with a brisk wing blowing into your face on the run up to the airfield a circuit of which forms part of the route. I was also straight into your face on the part of the airfield from kilometre 7 to 8.
The run always attracts a lot of club runners so the pace overall is pretty quick. On Sunday there were 380 people taking part. I finished in 132nd place in a time of 45.38, Les came in 205th in 50.19 closely followed by Pete in 213th with a time of 50.56.

December Dip
At the weekend Jason was took part in the annual December Dip. I can do no better than to recreate his initial text and subsequent e-mail regarding his experiences. Both created much amusement:
Here is the initial text:
"To all my so called mates who thought an outdoor December swim/dip in Parliament Hill Lido was a silly idea. It took years off me, I'm back to being a teenager waiting for my b***s to drop again. Don't know where they've gone."
Here is the subsequent e-mail:
"To all my fellow rock climbing / triathlon and oddball friends; this weekend the silly season for sports all met at once for me and I thought I would share the love with you all.
You are invited to view Jason Murphy's photo album: Silly Season For Sportshttps://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=107292863861133035690&target=ALBUM&id=5954736640150743873&authkey=Gv1sRgCOvuy5PH2uSDaw&feat=email
Something that seemed a good idea when I entered it back in the summer was the Outdoor Swimming Society's December Dip. Funnily enough none of my friends thought that this was a good idea at any time and unsurprisingly nobody agreed to join me this time.
Parliament Hill Lido in Hampstead Heath London at 11.00 am arrived far too soon for my own good. This year the weather was bright, not too cloudy oh and yes I forgot to mention that as it is an unheated pool, this morning it was just less than 6 oC for the event which included no wetsuits. In previous years it has been frosty / frozen at 2 oC
and gone ahead.
Before the event there was a best dressed swimmer award which went to the woman with the Loch Ness Monster contraption on her back. She had put a lot of effort in. She beat Hulk Hogan which got a big cheer. I didn't bother entering, the fact I was there was enough for me.
As the pool is 61m x 27.4m I decided to do enter the swim across the pool and back 54m. This was the best decision I have made in months. There were three waves of competitors doing this and I was in Wave 2. I wanted to see how this all panned out before I did my bit. No point peaking too early. Everyone made it out and back and so with much
trepidation I stood at the side and thought "He who dares Rodney, he who dares" - A good Delboy Quote if ever there was one. In hindsight, I would have been better of thinking "Brace yourself Rodney" - Louis the Seventeenth Chandelier Episode quote from Grandad.
I hit the water with a splash and suddenly thought - I did make a will, didn't I ? The blinding shock from the cold water immersion instantly woke me up, I remembered breathing wasn't going to happen on its own accord and physically had to stop my self holding my breath.
The searing icream headache and numbness all over my body soon distracted me from the pain in my right arm that occurred every time I tried to use it. (Right shoulder is really duff - Seeing consultant about it on Thursday.) I made it to the far side and looked up
expectantly, but nobody in my wave so far had quit and got out......As I wasn't going to the first I duly turned around and started back.
By this time the adrenaline had worn off, I had pounding in my ears, numbness over my body, which was starting to get to my core. I was slowing down and losing ground fast, then out of the corner of my eye I saw the Loch Ness Monster approaching. Enough was enough - i don't have much pride, (set low standards, fail to achieve them - had got
me this far in life) but losing to the Lady with a monster on her back was too much. I Manned Up, and mainly beacuse by now I couldn't feel anything in my arms, put a spurt on and finished ahead of her, still way down on loads of others. Pride restored until I tried to flop out of the pool and onto the side. I had to roll over and over away from the edge as my limbs wouldn't work, I couldn't stand up. Luckily I wasn't the only one in this position. Some times strangers do help.
By the time Wave three had finished I was in my dressing gown - Like I said I have no shame. There were two waves for the lengths and I watched these hardend fools have an actual race. The first few back actually were timing themselves. I would never have made 120m.
Once that was over most people dried off and went home, however 20minutes later people were still continuing to swim. I'm not that hard. I did however buy the "Swim The Thames" book which has all the start and exit points marked marked in it. Anyone interested next year?
Enjoy your Christmas and New Year,
Jason
P.S. For anyone who got my text this morning, it took about an hour and a half but I eventually found them."

Bedford Parkrun - 07.12.13
This morning conditions were almost perfect for running and 6 FlitwickTri runners were taking part. Three of us are running a 10K at Bicester tomorrow so had to take things a bit easier today. Fiona showed that she wasn't taking anything easy however as she ran to yet another PB.
Times were:
Stephen Clough 23.41
Chris Wright 23.44
Fiona Jones 26.03
Les Potts 29.11
Sian Jones 37.10
Pete Jones 37.11
Well done everyone.

Glow In The Park - Bedford - 01.12.13
On Saturday evening I went up to Box End to take part in the first Votwo Glow In The Park event. For those whoi don't know these are off road 5K or 10K races at night with all runners using head torches. There was a great atmosphere before the start with people with some very interesing lighting options and lots of glow sticks in evidence.
The run was around the Box End site but had loads of twists and turns, a number of short sharp slopes and was all on uneven cut grass tracks some of which were a bit boggy and slippery.
A good new event and given the route and conditions I was very pleased with my time of 23.25 which was good enough in the 5K race for 5th out of 51 runners.
