On Saturday 4 of us ventured up to Bedford for the last Parkrun of 2013. The Christmas festivities seemed to have taken their toll however as there were no PBs this time.
The times were:
Chris Wright 22.05
Les Potts 24.50
Pete Jones 26.01
Sian Jones 37.18
Well done everyone.

Pirton Boxing Day Run
On Sunday morning a few of us ventured over to the Pirton Boxing Day run. This is a real family event with races for under 7's, under 13's, under 16's and adults. The morning was bright and sunny but there was a cold wind and the rain of the past few days had made it a bit soggy underfoot.
Keira Murphy took part in the under 13's 1K race which involved 2 laps round the perimeter of the sports field. She did very well finishing in a time of 6.23 and beating a number of children 2 and 3 years older in the process.
I took part in the adults race which was 3.2 miles. This involved 2 laps round the sports field and then out for a loop around muddy tracks between fields before returning to finish with a lap round the sports field. Despite the puddles and slippery conditions I managed to get to the finish in a time of 23.54 for 53rd place out of a field of 218.
Overall this was a very good event and one I aim to take part in again in future years.

MK Parkrun - Christmas Day
Hi Folks
I had a nice time running the Christmas day Parkrun at MK. There were 300 others dressed in christmassy garb and trying to run around the course.
Unfortunately due to flooding we were turned around at the 3k mark and so the 5k parkrun became nearly 6k !
It was nice to get up and out building up an appetite ready for my Christmas lunch.... and prezzies.

Bedford Parkrun - 21.12.13
Drizzly and chilly conditions greeted 4 FlitwickTri members to Bedford Parkrun on Saturday. Despite this Steve achieved a new PB which was frustratingly a few seconds short of breaking the 23 minute barrier.
Times were:
Steve Clough 23.04
Pete Jones 25.51
Fiona Jones 27.55
Sian Jones 37.45
Well done everybody.

MK Winter Half Marathon - 15.12.13
I took part in the inaugural Milton Keynes Winter Half Marathon on Sunday 15th December. Run entirely off-road being one lap around the city centre and hence avoiding all of the steeper hills, the course was something between undulating and flat. Being on the paths and Redways it was a relatively scenic route though. Weather conditions were ideal for running.
My lack of distance training recently had an effect in the latter stages of the race and I was slightly disappointed with a time of 1hr 58min 40sec and was placed 370th out of 624.

Aylesbury Parkrun - 14.12.13
On Saturday Pete ventured a little further afield to take part in the recently started Aylesbury Parkrun. He achieved a time of 25.47 which is a PB for Pete at the event and the 15th different Parkrun he has taken part in. Impressive stuff.
Well done Pete.

Bedford Parkrun - 14.12.13
This morning 3 of us were at Bedford Parkrun but 2, Les and Steve, were there as volunteers with Les' role being tail runner.
Conditions were dry and chilly but I paid the price for yesterday's office Christmas Party and missed out on my PB attempt. Oh well, may be next time.
Times were:
Chris Wright 21.46
Les Potts 44.33.

Andy Reading 10K - 08.12.13
Sunday morning saw 3 of us in action at the annual Andy Reading memorial 10K race in Bicester. As usual the race was on a chilly December morning with a brisk wing blowing into your face on the run up to the airfield a circuit of which forms part of the route. I was also straight into your face on the part of the airfield from kilometre 7 to 8.
The run always attracts a lot of club runners so the pace overall is pretty quick. On Sunday there were 380 people taking part. I finished in 132nd place in a time of 45.38, Les came in 205th in 50.19 closely followed by Pete in 213th with a time of 50.56.

December Dip
At the weekend Jason was took part in the annual December Dip. I can do no better than to recreate his initial text and subsequent e-mail regarding his experiences. Both created much amusement:
Here is the initial text:
"To all my so called mates who thought an outdoor December swim/dip in Parliament Hill Lido was a silly idea. It took years off me, I'm back to being a teenager waiting for my b***s to drop again. Don't know where they've gone."
Here is the subsequent e-mail:
"To all my fellow rock climbing / triathlon and oddball friends; this weekend the silly season for sports all met at once for me and I thought I would share the love with you all.
You are invited to view Jason Murphy's photo album: Silly Season For Sportshttps://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=107292863861133035690&target=ALBUM&id=5954736640150743873&authkey=Gv1sRgCOvuy5PH2uSDaw&feat=email
Something that seemed a good idea when I entered it back in the summer was the Outdoor Swimming Society's December Dip. Funnily enough none of my friends thought that this was a good idea at any time and unsurprisingly nobody agreed to join me this time.
Parliament Hill Lido in Hampstead Heath London at 11.00 am arrived far too soon for my own good. This year the weather was bright, not too cloudy oh and yes I forgot to mention that as it is an unheated pool, this morning it was just less than 6 oC for the event which included no wetsuits. In previous years it has been frosty / frozen at 2 oC
and gone ahead.
Before the event there was a best dressed swimmer award which went to the woman with the Loch Ness Monster contraption on her back. She had put a lot of effort in. She beat Hulk Hogan which got a big cheer. I didn't bother entering, the fact I was there was enough for me.
As the pool is 61m x 27.4m I decided to do enter the swim across the pool and back 54m. This was the best decision I have made in months. There were three waves of competitors doing this and I was in Wave 2. I wanted to see how this all panned out before I did my bit. No point peaking too early. Everyone made it out and back and so with much
trepidation I stood at the side and thought "He who dares Rodney, he who dares" - A good Delboy Quote if ever there was one. In hindsight, I would have been better of thinking "Brace yourself Rodney" - Louis the Seventeenth Chandelier Episode quote from Grandad.
I hit the water with a splash and suddenly thought - I did make a will, didn't I ? The blinding shock from the cold water immersion instantly woke me up, I remembered breathing wasn't going to happen on its own accord and physically had to stop my self holding my breath.
The searing icream headache and numbness all over my body soon distracted me from the pain in my right arm that occurred every time I tried to use it. (Right shoulder is really duff - Seeing consultant about it on Thursday.) I made it to the far side and looked up
expectantly, but nobody in my wave so far had quit and got out......As I wasn't going to the first I duly turned around and started back.
By this time the adrenaline had worn off, I had pounding in my ears, numbness over my body, which was starting to get to my core. I was slowing down and losing ground fast, then out of the corner of my eye I saw the Loch Ness Monster approaching. Enough was enough - i don't have much pride, (set low standards, fail to achieve them - had got
me this far in life) but losing to the Lady with a monster on her back was too much. I Manned Up, and mainly beacuse by now I couldn't feel anything in my arms, put a spurt on and finished ahead of her, still way down on loads of others. Pride restored until I tried to flop out of the pool and onto the side. I had to roll over and over away from the edge as my limbs wouldn't work, I couldn't stand up. Luckily I wasn't the only one in this position. Some times strangers do help.
By the time Wave three had finished I was in my dressing gown - Like I said I have no shame. There were two waves for the lengths and I watched these hardend fools have an actual race. The first few back actually were timing themselves. I would never have made 120m.
Once that was over most people dried off and went home, however 20minutes later people were still continuing to swim. I'm not that hard. I did however buy the "Swim The Thames" book which has all the start and exit points marked marked in it. Anyone interested next year?
Enjoy your Christmas and New Year,
Jason
P.S. For anyone who got my text this morning, it took about an hour and a half but I eventually found them."

Bedford Parkrun - 07.12.13
This morning conditions were almost perfect for running and 6 FlitwickTri runners were taking part. Three of us are running a 10K at Bicester tomorrow so had to take things a bit easier today. Fiona showed that she wasn't taking anything easy however as she ran to yet another PB.
Times were:
Stephen Clough 23.41
Chris Wright 23.44
Fiona Jones 26.03
Les Potts 29.11
Sian Jones 37.10
Pete Jones 37.11

Glow In The Park - Bedford - 01.12.13
On Saturday evening I went up to Box End to take part in the first Votwo Glow In The Park event. For those whoi don't know these are off road 5K or 10K races at night with all runners using head torches. There was a great atmosphere before the start with people with some very interesing lighting options and lots of glow sticks in evidence.
The run was around the Box End site but had loads of twists and turns, a number of short sharp slopes and was all on uneven cut grass tracks some of which were a bit boggy and slippery.
A good new event and given the route and conditions I was very pleased with my time of 23.25 which was good enough in the 5K race for 5th out of 51 runners.

Pete Jones 23.43
Les Potts 23.46
Fiona Jones 26.47

Movember Run MK - 24.11.13.
A chilly morning greeted the 4 FlitwickTri members who were due to take part in the 2013 Movember Run in MK. All were sporting impressive Mo's as can be seen in the photos below. There was a very good turnout with 729 runners taking part in the 10K race, some in very impressive fancy dress.
Unfortunately both Jason and Les were carrying injuries and were not able to run. Their support was however very much appreciated as were Jason's photographic skills.
The course is very undulating with a particularly tough section from 5k to 8k.
The times were:
Chris Wright 84th in 48.02
Pete Jones 205th in 53.35

This morning 7 of us travelled up to Bedford for the week's Parkrun. It was much drier underfoot but whilst there was no frost the weather was pretty cold. This didn't hinder Fiona's running however as she set a new PB.
Les, Pete and I were taking things a bit easier ahead of the Movember run tomorrow but still enjoyed a run out.
The times were:
Les Potts 26.04
Pete Jones 27.07
Fiona Jones 27.08

Pete's weekend - 16 & 17 November
Had a great weekend of runs. I ran the Worcester Parkrun on Sat and the Croome Capability Canter on Sun.
I manage to knock nearly two and a half minutes off my Parkrum pb at Worcester, which is largely a cross country bringing it down from 26m 44s to 24m 18s.
On Sunday I was not sure if my legs would hold up for Croome which is a 10k cross country – including 2 wading streams. This being my first time doing a 10k Xcountry I was pleased with my 59m50s, taking into account the slopes and fields and water involved. It was a fun event with a winning time of 40min.

Falkirk Parkrun - 02.11.13
Whilst in Scotland for the weekend I took the opportunity to try a different Parkrun with the most convenient being Falkirk .
Oddly it takes place at 9.30am rather than our usual 9am in the grounds of Calendar House & Park. Needless to say it was very scenic and very cold. The course was undulating with virtually no flat parts – something we are not used to and was mainly on trail paths through some very nice woods.
I was 83rd out of 160 runners coming in at 25m 50s.

Bedford Parkrun - 02.11.13
I entered the Bedford parkrun this week after a few weeks absence. My time was given as 23.16 which was a few seconds quicker than I timed myself which was quite significant as that meant it was officially a PB whereas I had thought I had missed out by a couple of seconds. I finished 39th out of 168.

I was the sole participant from Flitwick Tri at this event. Fortunately conditions were ideal being mild, dry and with no wind.
In a time of 23m 59s (1 second outside my PB) I came 36th out of a field of 153 and was 1st in my age category.

Perkins Great Eastern Half Marathon
Liam & I along with friend Michael took part in the above event on Sunday 13th October in Peterborough . It started and finished at the Embankment and was run on closed roads throughout the city centre and surrounding residential areas. The course was pancake flat with definite PB potential.
It was a mass participation race with some 5,200 entries to the Half with another 1,600 entrants to supporting races. As such the organisation had to be, and was, superb, the marshals were mostly supportive as were the spectators. The goody bag included a technical t-shirt and a medal plus the usual gels & fruit etc.
The only negative was the awful weather i.e. cold, windy & persistent rain before and during the race. Fortunately conditions did improve one third of the way into the race when at least it stopped raining.
Of the 5,200 entries results were only published for those 3,842 that completed in the 3hour 30 minute time limit so either there was a lot of runners taking longer than 3.5 hours or many stayed away due to the adverse weather conditions.
Unfortunately neither Liam nor I achieved a PB with Liam coming in with a time of 1:43:16 in 993rd place based on chip time, and I got a time of 1:55:22 in 1955th place.

Ampthill Trophy Cross Country - 20.10.13
Sunday dawned bright but showery after plenty of rain overnight and earlier in the moring which made parts of the Ampthill Trophy Cross Country route rather slippery.
The route was 2 laps of Ampthill Park with the organisers finding plenty of uphill and downhill sections but very little flat which made for a tough 5 mie course.
5 FlitwickTri members took place and the times were:
Stephen Clough 43.36
Dan Georgescu 44.25
Chris Wright 45.10
Les Potts 47.06
Pete Jones 49.04

Survival Of The Fittest - 12.10.13
Pete, Fiona and I were in Nottingham yesterday to take part in the Men's Health - Survival of the Fittest event. Think 10K run with a series of assault course obstacles and several dips in the River Trent and you won't be far wrong. Alternatively follow this link to the event website and have a look at the video.
http://www.mhsurvival.co.uk/nottingam/
The weather was damp and overcast though largely rain free during our race but the heavens opened afterwards. Judging by the amount of mud we encountered it had also rained very heavily earlier in the day.
The event was challenging and the two dips in the very cold river were bracing (that's the polite version) and much of the race was completed soaking wet and very dirty. Despite this it was a really enjoyable event and all those taking part had big smiles on their faces, even those who were clearly struggling.
We decided to stick together as Team FlitwickTri and kept running all the way and worked together where necessary to get over the obstacles. Some of them required a team effort especially the 2.5 metre tall wall at the very end!
We finished the event in around 1 hour 45 minutes and I have no idea where we finished but to be honest that wasn't the point. The idea was to get round and enjoy ourselves and in that respect we felt like winners and collected our well deserved medals.
We don't have a before photo but here is one of us afterwards:
It would be great to go back next year with a bigger team.

Bedford Triathlon - 6.10.13
On Sunday 6th I entered the end of season Bedford Super Sprint triathlon, the 3rd of 3 identical races held during the year. The format is a 400m swim, 24k bike ride and 5k run round Bedford Park, a route familiar to parkrunners.
Due to my slow swimming, I had a very early start time of 7.50am. However, the weather was fine with no wind and later on it turned into a very warm day. Swimmers were set off at 20 second intervals and swam up and back the first lane before ducking into the second lane and so on. That meant there was much less overtaking (or in my case, getting in the way) than normal. In fact, I even managed to overtake the chap who started ahead of me. The bike was a little longer than the 20k standard sprint distance and I overtook quite a few competitors and was only overtaken 3 times myself – twice by the same person who stopped for some reason and once by a club cyclist not in the event. I was motivated on the run to get inside my 1hr 30 target time, which I did finishing in 1:28. However, although my chip recorded all the splits, for some reason it did not record the finish. However, all’s well that ends well as they were good enough to accept my self timed finish for the record. I suppose they might not if I’d claimed 4 minute mile pace on the run.
Compared to the Kimbolton and Roade events run by Just Racing, it didn’t feel quite as well organised; eg there was only one briefing, seemed to be fewer marshals, bike racking was a free for all, swim start times were meant to be in number order but in fact were only approximate – but these are minor things (chip issues aside) and I definitely preferred the course. I will certainly look to enter again next year. Also, they gave detailed stats on the splits, which shows pretty clearly where I could do with improving. Out of 360 finishers, I was 311th in the swim, 140th on the bike and 146th on the run, for 173rd overall. So, it’s a good thing the swim is the shortest element.

New Garmin Connect group
I am delighted to announce that there is now a FlitwickTri group on Garmin Connect. This includes an event calendar which can be updated to include events people are doing and website links to the event organisers.
It is early days for this and I am still learning about its capabilities. It should, I believe, be possible for members to add events and I suggest in the notes that you add your name if you enter the event so we can see who is doing what events.
If you have any problems please let me know.

Parkrun Northampton - 05.10.13
Pete Jones and I decided to have a change of scenery this week and visit Northampton Parkrun for only the second time. Running conditions were very good being cool, dry & windless.
Conditions obviously suited both of us as Pete beat his Bedford & MK PB’s by 19 & 21 seconds respectively and although not his best time ever his time of 23m11s put him in 66th place in a field of 205.
This race also saw me get a new 5k PB coming 77th in a time of 23m47s.

Royal Parks Half Marathon - 6 October 2013
A lovely morning greeted me at Hyde Park this morning for the Royal Parks Half Marathon. This is a big event and this year was the biggest ever with 14,841 people taking part.
The route took in many of the sights of London with all the early sections round the tourist hotspots including The Mall, Westminster Bridge, Embankment and Hyde Park Corner on closed roads.
I was chatting to a really nice bloke at the start and we decided to run together until mile 10 when he eased away from me. This was clearly a good strategy for me as I managed to knock over 3 minutes off my PB. I also learnt a very good lesson today and that is to have your name on your vest. there was a huge crown supporting the event and it was amazing to hear so many people cheering
me on by name. It gives a real lift which was very welcome, especially in the last few miles.
Another plus was that I raised nearly £800 for RNIB.
I ended up finishing in 1:41:27 for 1454th place out of the 14,841 people taking part.

Bedford Parkrun - 05.10.13
This morning I was FlitwickTri's sole representative at Bedford Parkrun. Ahead of tomorrow's half marathon I had been due to be tail runner but someone else was happy to do that so I acted as pacer instead. I was asked to do sub 30 minutes and was slightly quicker at 29.13 but many of the people running with me were very happy with their times and some new PBs.

Roade Triathlon - 30.09.13
Hi Folks
On Sunday 30th Sept I took part in my first Roade Sprint tri with Stephen Clough.
It was a nice day and we both enjoyed the well run event. The swim was a bit
cramped having only 4 lanes but I did manage to over take a couple of people – very
rare for me !
As it was a new race for us both, we both got PB’s
Stephen piped me in a time of 1hr15m against my 1hr20m.
With 513 contenders I was please with my 320th place and Stephen finished 252nd.
It was a nice 2 lap cycle with one sharp bend which nearly caught me out and an
odd 2x out and back run along village streets....
A good way to spend a sunny Sunday

Ikano Robin Hood Half Marathon – 29th September 2013
Liam & I took part in the above event and apart from the traffic chaos in Nottingham city centre before the race it was a superb event.
In addition to the 6,585 runners in the half there was full & mini marathon events also taking place. The city centre roads were closed for the entire race with ample water and Lucozade stations throughout. There were lots of supportive marshals and an enormous crowd encouraging us to the finish.
The route was almost entirely flat and the weather perfect being sunny cool & windless.
For me I had a race of two halves completing the first 10k too fast in 51m41s and the last 10k too slow in 57m27s. Despite the slow second half I did finish with a time of 1:54:56 some 1minute 42seconds off my PB. I came in at 2,596th place.
Given that Liam was running with a foot injury he finished in a very decent 1,390th place in a time of 1:45:01.
Our reward was a great medal and we even managed to blagg some food & drink from the Sweatshop VIP marquee before they realized we weren’t entitled to be in there!!

Bedford Parkrun - 28.09.13
A pleasant morning greeted 8 FlitwickTri members at the Bedford Parkrun today. We had 6 runners, with Les taking part as tail runner, and 2 other volunteers in Pete and Liam.
It was an eventful race with Lois twisting her knee as she moved out of the way of a runner going past and having to retire. Then I went flying as I caught my foot on the path where it was raised by a tree root.
Times were:
Chris Wright 21.28
Fiona Jones 27.25
Ellen Wright 32.57
Sian Jones 37.20
Les Potts 40.54
Well done everyone.

Eton Man half ironman triathlon 22.09.13
On Sunday morning at the crack of dawn Jason was in action at Eton Dorney Lake to take part in the Votwo Day of Endurance and he chose the Half Iron distance event for his first open water triathlon. Clealy his thinking was "there's nothing like throwing yourself in at the deep end."
The distances facing Jason were a 1.9K swim in the rowing lake followed by 56 miles on the bike and then a run of 13.1 miles.
Things started well with a swim time of 43.27, transition 1 went by in 6.38 and then there was an issue as the cyclist in front of Jason crashed and caused Jason to crash into the barrier at the transition exit in an effort to avoid a major pile up. No damage was caused to his bike but the same could not be said for his hand, wrist and arm. His right hand was therefore effectively out of use for the ride and he was limited to one gear and only one brake for the duration.
Despite the injury and the consequential gearing and braking issues Jason managed a very creditable 3 hour 30 minute 45 second bike split which equates to an impressive 16mph average speed. Les and I arrived to cheer Jason on a few laps from the end of the bike leg and were not aware of the issue until transition 2.
The duration of T2 was slightly longer than usual as he received first aid treatment and had his wrist strapped. His arm was by this time developing some interesting coloured bruises and was obviously very painfull.
Given the injury Jason did well to set off on the run at a reasonable pace but later slowed to a walk for much of the run to make himself more comfortable. He finished the run in 3 hours 3 minutes and 10 seconds for a very creditable overall time of 7.32.40.
It turns out that Jason had actually broken his thumb in the crash as confirmed today by x-ray. He also now has a multicoloured upper arm and shoulder.
An impressive performance and display of determination (stubbornness) in the face of adversity.
Brilliant effort Jason.

Milton Keynes Parkrun - 14.09.13
While some people were away and another FlitwickTri members were running at Bedford Parkrun Steve Clough represented the group in the MK Parkrun. Despite the poor coinditions he managed a very good time of 23.24 for a new PB.
Well done Steve.
Well done Steve.
Bedford Parkrun - 14.09.13
Four Flitwick Tri members took part in the above event on a wet and chilly Saturday morning.
According to my Garmin I broke the 24 minute mark for the first time unfortunately though the official results were not so kind:
28th Liam Ko 21:42
58th Les Potts 24:01 - PB
67th Pete Jones 24:29
161st Sian Jones 38:17

Grunty Fen half-marathon - 08.09.13
Liam & I took part in the above event on a sunny and cool September morning that was pretty good for running.
The course was virtually flat with ample marshals who were always vocal in their support, there was plenty of drinks station and wet sponges. Likewise the local community were very supportive. All in all a well organised event.
Liam ran very consistently averaging 4.78minutes/k and achieved a time of 1:41:20 a massive 6 minutes 28 seconds of his previous PB!! He came 165th.
I wasn’t quite that fast coming in at 1:57:19 but this was just 43 seconds outside my PB. I came in at number 364.
We received decent medals and a £5 Sweatshop voucher.
Oddly the race was sold out with 800 competitors but there are only results for 575? This may have had something to do with the 2.5 hour limit although there were several results published in excess of this.

Steve achieved a very good new PB and Lois showed her new training regime is working by knocking nearly 4 minutes off her last run time from 4 weeks ago.
The times were:
Chris Wright 21.39
Liam Ko 22.02
Steve Clough 23.43
Pete Jones 24.26
Fiona Jones 28.30
Ellen Wright 32.15
Sian Jones 37.43

Silverstone Duathlon - 05.09.13
Steve Clough and I were amongst 138 competitors at the last Silverstone Duathlon of 2013. Weather-wise it was a fantastic evening and as usual there were a lot of very serious riders with equally impressive racing bikes.
The event consisted of two 2 mile runs around the Porsche circuit either side of a 10 mile cycle ride. This time the cycle ride consisted of 5 laps of the international circuit rather than the normal 3 laps of the GP circuit. Apparently this represents a slightly shorter race distance and hence it was not easy to draw comparisons with previous race times.
Sector times were as follows:
Steve 14m59s – 53s – 30m37s – 43s – 15m49s = total time of 1:03:01
Les 15m04s – 43s – 36m14s – 37s – 17m38s = total time of 1:10:13
Unfortunately severe cramp at the dismount line saw me & mybike crash to the ground – the only thing that hurt was my pride and the cramp in my legs.
Of the 136 finishers Steve came 96th and I came 126th.
